I never thought Oasis had a look, but other people did and that's cool. For me, the music is always more important than the fashion. Trainers only last for about six months, but a good melody lives forever.
Iconic photographer Kevin Cummins has always been at the heart of the cultural action. He's been an adventurous fan and an inside eyewitness, capturing the look of alternative UK music for the past 50 years. According to Paul Morley, no one has done it better.
Writer Miranda Sawyer describes Cummins as a typical Mancunian who combines art with a good time. His sense of beauty is evident in his memorable and defining shots of Liam and Noel in Man City shirts.
How does a band actually come into being? What are all the different forces that shape their sound, look, and identity? In 1993, Oasis signed with Creation Records and began recording their first album. The following year, a masterplan was put into motion to create the band's image. At the centre of this was Kevin Cummins, who was brought in to help the band find a look that matched their sound.
In the book, Oasis: The Masterplan, we follow Cummins as he photographs the band while they solidify their identity. The book features Noel Gallagher's thoughts on football, fashion, and music, along with his recollections of that formative year. Cummins also shares his own perspective. The book reveals how Oasis experimented with fashion and learned how to pose and present themselves in the lead-up to the release of their first album, Definitely Maybe. The story from that point on is well known. Featuring 75% previously unseen images, the book shows just how effective the masterplan was in getting them to that moment.
