The definitive biography of one of music history's most beloved, versatile, and unforgettable icons has arrived. Roy Orbison, the singer-songwriter behind legendary hits like "Only the Lonely," "Crying," and "Oh, Pretty Woman," lived a life defined by chart-topping highs and devastating tragic lows. Unlike his contemporaries, he didn't look, move, or sound like a typical star; instead, he became the "King of Hearts," known for emotionally charged, slow-burning drama-ballads that struck a worldwide chord.
Acclaimed music biographer Jeff Apter explores the mystique of a man clad in black with dark shades. Orbison possessed a voice that was unmistakably different from peers like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, or Jerry Lee Lewis. As Bruce Springsteen once noted, Roy hit notes that sounded "like the world's going to end."
Born in Vernon, Texas, Roy was the son of a guitar-playing oil worker. His musical journey began at age six, leading to a high school band and honky-tonk gigs. He eventually signed with Sun Records, finding mentors among legends like Carl Perkins. A later move to Monument Records saw him sharing stages with The Beatles, who were among his biggest fans. It was during this era that he refined his signature sound—songs heavy with pathos and remarkable operatic vocals.
However, professional success was followed by immense personal tragedy, including the deaths of his wife and two sons. Following 20 lean years in the shadows, Roy staged a legendary comeback during the rockabilly revival of the 1980s. This rebirth was cemented by the formation of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys and a collaboration with Jeff Lynne.
When asked how he wished to be remembered, Roy simply hoped to be mentioned among the greats who had an impact. With his enduring legacy, he certainly got his wish.
