Born in Birmingham, Steve Winwood displayed his musical talents early, becoming a semi-professional keyboard and guitar player while still attending school. As the lead vocalist for The Spencer Davis Group, he remarkably achieved two chart-topping singles before even reaching the age of eighteen. In 1967, he went on to form Traffic, a band long recognised as a significant force in the British psychedelic movement, whose music also skillfully incorporated elements of jazz and folk alongside rock and pop sensibilities.
A brief interlude saw him collaborate with Eric Clapton in the short-lived supergroup Blind Faith, after which he returned to Traffic until their initial disbandment in 1974 (they would later briefly reform two decades on). Throughout his subsequent and highly successful solo career, Winwood has garnered considerable respect on both sides of the Atlantic as a distinctive vocalist, accomplished multi-instrumentalist, and sought-after collaborator and session player for numerous other artists. This book marks the first biography of this influential musician in nearly thirty years.
